3.4.4. Formatting for Mac Users

The steps listed below will help you format and partition your disk

drive using Mac OS X. Please see 3.4.2. Formatting for Window

XP Users or 3.4.3. Formatting for Windows Vista and Windows 7

Users for instructions on formatting using alternative operating

systems. For more information on the optimal ﬁle format, go to

3.4.1. File System Formats.

TECHNICAL NOTE: LaCie suggests using the Mac OS Extended

format since it may provide a more familiar experience to Macin-

tosh users.

CAUTION: Following these steps will erase everything from the

2big USB 3.0. Backup all data stored on your LaCie hard disk

drive before formatting it.

1. Connect the drive to the computer and turn it on.

2. Select Utilities from the Go menu in the Finder menu bar.

3. In the Utilities folder, double-click Disk Utility.

4. The Disk Utility window will open (Fig. 33). Select your La-

Cie hard disk drive from the list of available hard disks on

the left side of the window.

5. Select the Partition tab (Fig. 34).
